Monte Rio · The Russian River
A mid-century cabin held up in the redwoods, where the windows are mostly forest.
Built into a hillside of second-growth redwoods, the Treehaus sits a little above the ground and a little inside the canopy. Light comes in green and moves all day. Mornings are slow and full of birds; evenings belong to the wood stove and a record left turning. It was made to be lived in, not just looked at.
The great room
The heart of the house is a single open space under a peaked ceiling — kitchen, table, and a deep sectional arranged around a cast-iron wood stove. The Eames lounge faces the trees, which is the correct way to face.
The kitchen
Everything you need to actually cook — good knives, cast iron, a proper coffee setup. Help yourself to the coffee, the spices, and whatever fruit is on the counter. The window over the sink opens for a cross-breeze.
Two bedrooms
A calm main bedroom and a second room built for kids — bunks, a daybed, and a small desk under the window. Linens are good, the beds are comfortable, and the forest does the rest.
The setting
Perched on a wooded hill above downtown Monte Rio, the Treehaus is off the grid in spirit but minutes from everything that makes west Sonoma County worth the trip. Swim or paddle the Russian River, wander the redwood cathedral at Armstrong Woods, and chase the fog out to Goat Rock and the Sonoma Coast. Markets, bakeries, oysters, and wineries are all a short, beautiful drive — and San Francisco is only an hour and a half south.
The neighborhood
A short list gathered over years of living out here, between the river and the sea — Monte Rio and Guerneville, Occidental and Jenner, Duncans Mills, Freestone, and the Bodega coast. Most are a few minutes away; the best are worth the drive.
Outside
Wraparound decks step down through the hillside garden to a clearing of redwoods. There's a picnic table and a grill, two long chairs for the sun, and a cedar hot tub for after dark. The garden is planted and tended — pick a little if you like.
Everything worth knowing before you come.
House notes
We live in a high fire-risk zone, so there are no fires or open flames, inside or out. No smoking indoors, no pets, and please keep things quiet between 11pm and 8am out of respect for the neighbors who live here year-round. Otherwise, treat it as your own.
