Bohemian
Treehaus

A mid-century cabin held up in the redwoods, where the windows are mostly forest.

Scroll

Built into a hillside of second-growth redwoods, the Treehaus sits a little above the ground and a little inside the canopy. Light comes in green and moves all day. Mornings are slow and full of birds; evenings belong to the wood stove and a record left turning. It was made to be lived in, not just looked at.

Open-plan great room with a vaulted ceiling, Eames lounge chair, grey sectional, and a wall of windows looking into sunlit trees.

The great room

One vaulted room, three walls of glass, and a fire for the cold months.

The heart of the house is a single open space under a peaked ceiling — kitchen, table, and a deep sectional arranged around a cast-iron wood stove. The Eames lounge faces the trees, which is the correct way to face.

A sunlit corner of the living room with a cowhide chair, a sculptural branch, and tall windows over a blue sofa.

A narrow balcony with a yellow bistro set and string lights, running along the green-trimmed shingle wall beside a redwood.
A balcony wrapped in green, off the main room.
A compact, warm-wood kitchen with open shelving and a window over the sink looking into the trees.

The kitchen

Small, complete, and stocked.

Everything you need to actually cook — good knives, cast iron, a proper coffee setup. Help yourself to the coffee, the spices, and whatever fruit is on the counter. The window over the sink opens for a cross-breeze.

The main bedroom, bright and simple, wrapped on two sides by large windows full of green leaves.
The main bedroom wakes up inside the canopy.
A cushioned window seat layered with linen pillows beneath a corner of windows.

Two bedrooms

Room for a family, or two couples who like each other.

A calm main bedroom and a second room built for kids — bunks, a daybed, and a small desk under the window. Linens are good, the beds are comfortable, and the forest does the rest.

A playful children's room with built-in plywood bunk beds, a play tent, and bright furniture.

Skylights for counting stars.

The setting

Walk to the river. Drive to the coast.

Perched on a wooded hill above downtown Monte Rio, the Treehaus is off the grid in spirit but minutes from everything that makes west Sonoma County worth the trip. Swim or paddle the Russian River, wander the redwood cathedral at Armstrong Woods, and chase the fog out to Goat Rock and the Sonoma Coast. Markets, bakeries, oysters, and wineries are all a short, beautiful drive — and San Francisco is only an hour and a half south.

The neighborhood

The places we send everyone.

A short list gathered over years of living out here, between the river and the sea — Monte Rio and Guerneville, Occidental and Jenner, Duncans Mills, Freestone, and the Bodega coast. Most are a few minutes away; the best are worth the drive.

Outside

A deck in the trees and a cedar tub waiting.

Wraparound decks step down through the hillside garden to a clearing of redwoods. There's a picnic table and a grill, two long chairs for the sun, and a cedar hot tub for after dark. The garden is planted and tended — pick a little if you like.
